Why study Geography in Munich?

The Ludwig-Maximilians University (LMU) in Munich is one of Germany’s universities of excellence and is considered Germany’s Alps-University. At the same time it is one of the largest universities in Germany with a vivid student life and manifold cultural activities. The Department of Geography at LMU is one of the largest and most storied geographical units in Central Europe. Students benefit from a broad and qualifying teaching program and from a multi-faceted research landscape focused on environmental, social and economic aspects in mountain regions.

Since 2006 the former three Munich geographies (social, economic and physical geography) are united under the roof of the Department of Geography of LMU. Four research and teaching units, namely human geography, economic geography, hydrology and landscape ecology have joined forces to offer comprehensive teaching programs on the bachelor and master level as well as teachers training programs. They take full advantage of the broad range of disciplines of the only full-university in Munich.

As part of their studies we offer students access to the science frontier. Research in national and international project collaborations centers on the manifold spatial aspects of the changing relationship of nature and humans in different regions of the world. It takes into account climate change and the multiple aspects of sustainable development. It is supported by intensive research on geographical methodology in remote sensing, GIS and environmental and social simulation.

We greatly value international relations. Based on over 70 cooperations with prestigious universities around the world LMU offers a large palette of combinations of minor subjects and exchange programs. We are part of the European ERASMUS exchange program. The Department of Geography has established and long term cooperation with academic institutions in Kazakhstan, Russia, Cuba, France, Italy, Austria, Netherlands, Australia and the United States.

The fast growing high-tech region of Munich also offers qualifying internships in geography related companies, administration and research facilities in the fields of geomatics (GIS, remote sensing), insurance, tourism, etc.
